This was one of those moments when I realized the car was really coming together! My son had COVID-19 and was out of service for about 10 days, but feeling better now – so I was able to get a lot of sheetmetal work completed, and he came back to help with the rollbar setup.
Here a a few pics of how I setup the rest of the trunk panels. I used a hinged door to allow access for the Boyd Welding tank setup for the fuel pump and fuel return line. I also used some rivnuts to setup the access panel for the fuel-sender just in case it needs serviced.
Dialing in the rear cockpit wall is a bit tedious, one or two degrees on any panel will tweak other fitment elsewhere. I figured this is still all stuff under the pad/carpet so as long as there is good fitment, we’re good to go!
Fitting the rollbars was more challenging than expected. First you mount the rear leg, and then drop the hoop from above, making sure to align to the rear leg. The tolerances are VERY tight, so we had to dremel off some of the chrome on the male & female connect points.
White lithium grease is highly recommended as well. Once the bars are ‘placed’ then the process of drilling begins. Keep them snugged up, tape them together! I’ll be using 520 Speedworks internal mounts so thankfully no drilling for the rear to hoop!
Suggestions for this step:
- Use painters tape to keep your finish unmarred
- use an automatic center punch to get a head start on where your drill will start, and not slip!
- use cobalt drill bits, I suggest a 3/16″ bit at first to break through the surface
- finish with the 5/16″ cobalt drill bit for the final size
- take your time and use cutting oil, this is hardened steel so it’s TOUGH and takes a while
Note in the first pic, there’s a little bung on each of the riser pipes, this is to help with tubing placement. DON’T remove them! Here was the final setup result after about an hour of time drilling 6 holes…
Now it’s onto a bunch of steps to get this upper area buttoned up. I’m using the Breeze cubby setup, and it will have to be modified to accept the trunk hydraulic struts as well as prepping for the speaker setup. Lots of little things!
