I chose the Boyd Welding MKIV roadster tank because many folks said it’s great to have a larger tank and honestly it’s a fantastic design! My prior post was getting the tank ready for installation. So here we go!
First, I positioned the tank under the rear section using some towels to protect the powder coating. It’s a tight fit that takes a little massaging and getting the height correct is important. You’d assume that this is a two person job, but I got creative and used 4 bungee cables to hold the tank in place.
Using the bungees holds the tank while I can position the tabs properly onto the chassis. The rear of the tank lines up under the back of the frame. I measured about 4″ in from both sides to install the bolts. I used the same bolt and nut combo from the FFR tank setup that’s used for the straps. I position the rear tab to be flush with the back of the chassis. This was important to give enough tab coverage in the front for the connections there. I had to pull the tank to drill the tabs – as I don’t have a 90″ drill chuck – that would be helpful in this case. I used a step bit which worked perfectly for this setup.
Second step was to get the rear tabs mounted to keep the tank level. This took a little trial and error using a level, but I was able to get the tank 1.3″ all around, under the “V” rails in the trunk space. The rear tabs are about .5″ wider than the 3/4″ rails so I added a nut inside the tabs to give it space and keep from crushing. The nyloc nut was used on the ends outside the tabs.
Finally, it only takes 4 bolts to get this tank mounted up. it looks great IMHO and gives me another 10 gallons of range for the roadster. I may do a mini-drop trunk mod to gain a little more space in the trunk. It’s not much, but every bit helps in this trunk! This tank should be able to get > 400 miles per fill up with highway driving.
Overall, I’m very happy with the install! Quality built tank, and doesn’t require too much modification to make it work. Plus I get the added benefit of more miles per tank and a solid fuel pump to feed the Coyote Gen3
