One of the first changes I made to the build was to add the Boyd Welding gas tank. It’s a work of art, but more importantly it holds > 25 gallons of gas, which in this car is a bit overkill – but then again, this whole project has turned into ‘overkill’ 🙂 One of the mods that many people make is called the ‘drop trunk’ mod – with the stock Mustang tank there’s quite a bit of room to be had. My friend Russ Thompson makes this mod – highly recommended if you have a stock setup !
Here are a few pics to show the difference!
From the photos above, you can clearly see that adding a drop trunk greatly increases your storage space!! With my Boyd tank setup, I only have 2 inches of clearance between the tank and the floor of the trunk. It’s not huge, but space is a premium here! I also relocated the battery from the trunk to the engine bay with the Breeze battery box.
Ok – back to my setup…
I initially measured out a funky shape to keep the 3/4″ trunk alignment rails – but after many discussions – they’re only there to keep the jig straight during assembly. So I opted to cut them and make a rectangular box. I used a free cad tool called https://www.emachineshop.com/ and developed this drop in box. I did leave a part of the 3/4″ rails intact to add a little more support around the edges. So far it’s worked out well!
I had the box fabbed up at a local shop, only cost $60 and he even spot welded the corners and soldered them for a great seal. I did spray some paint on the corners to keep any corrosion from occurring depending on the solder. It’s not pretty now, but will be under carpet soon.
I have a little more work to do. The drop is pretty small, adding only .38 cu ft, but I’ll take it! I’ll be adding a riveted panel over the fuel sender, and I have a hinge that I’m using to create a door for serviceability for the fuel pump and fuel return line. Just a matter of drilling/riveting left now!
